“PPCC Communication”
May 2021
Hi all….Welcome to the May 2021 edition of the PPCC Communication.
April 2021:
Once again, April has been very kind to our riders with sunny and mild weather for most riding days. Most riders are still opting to go off with Gary at 8:50am to do the shorter course. This earlier time was for Gary to go off 10 minutes earlier with the rest of the club off at 9:00am on the same course. As I said last month….talk around the ‘coffee table’ shows a keenness to get back to Abattoirs Road and Broughton Road ride to the ‘phone box’ and back now that the shoulders have been widened on the Broughton Road. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be riding the longer course which would then see Gary back to his normal time at 9:00am with the faster riders chasing.
Roll up in front of Gary’s at 8:55am and let’s get the main bunch off together on the longer course.
Well done to our club captain (and Ride Leader) for bringing up safety concerns for discussion over coffee after rides. Stop signs, especially ‘Georges Corner’ has been the topic of conversation several times but last week it started a lot of discussion. Remember….We are a registered club that is run by a ‘constitution’ and at our AGM’s, practices are put in place and voted on by you, our members. Huey was voted in as club captain at the 2020 AGM and we implemented ‘ride leaders’ who are there to ‘call the shots’ for each ride. I found it very disappointing that the stop sign issue our club captain/ride leader raised was by some thought to be ‘a non-event’. Leaving a stop sign in several groups, sees riders spread out along the road the other side of the stop sign which presents an unnecessary hazard for vehicles having to ‘weave’ in and out of the groups as they attempt to pass cyclists. Ride leaders were implemented for a reason…..you may not agree with what any one of the elected 4 may have to say but remember …you voted them in to the position so afford them the respect they deserve and ride as per their instructions.
Remember – The public will judge all bicycle riders by your actions. Your actions can undermine the goodwill of other cyclists.

Whyalla Cycle Club – Crystal Brook 60km Cycle Road Race:
A message from the Whyalla Cycling Club 5th May 2021:
“Hi Brenton,
We had a Race committee meeting tonight to further discuss this event “Crystal Brook Tour “ and a couple of points have come up:
-
Some concern about the road works currently under way between Gulnare & Gladstone – can you confirm the road condition and whether road works are underway or any are planned. I will also try and contact the Crystal Bk council, if they have any details. We are keen to promote the event but need confirmation of the road condition to ensure rider safety. Once the Road condition is confirmed as safe we can start advertising & promoting the event.
-
Volunteer’s for the day – may need 1 or 2 from Pirie if you can discuss, we think we will have 4 from Whyalla but may need a few other hands, may be just be as support vehicle to follow riders, making sure we all return etc. If you could discuss, I’ll let you know how we go but would be nice to have few extras.
See how you go with the above. I’ll contact the Crystal Bk Police & Council and notify them of the event.
Stay in touch. Happy for you to call if you need more.
Cheers
Derek Siwek
Whyalla Cycling Club”
Please think about supporting this event as a volunteer as asked by the WCC. Port Pirie was well represented in the very first Crystal Brook ride in 2019 and numbers are looking good for the 2021 race/come try event. The PPCC is going to provide a ‘sausage sizzle’ after the ride so if you can help out as a volunteer, it will be greatly appreciated.
Derek Norton and I drove the course last week to see what road works were happening and was disappointed to see that the whole road from Georgetown to Gladstone had been ‘ripped up’ and a new one was under construction but as yet, no bitumen had been laid. I phoned Derek Siwek with the news and alternative routes were discussed. The latest news was the road works were scheduled to be completed by the 21st May so at this stage, the ride is still scheduled for the 26th June on the same course. Keep training and stay tuned for further developments

‘State Champion’:
“All the training has paid off. Peter (Rocket) Northcott is the division 4 Sate Veterans Criterium Champion. Peter raced in the South Australian Veterans State Criterium Championships at Regency Park on February 17th 2002. The pace was obviously not quick enough for the ‘Rocket’ as he broke from the pack to win the race easily in fine style. Congratulations Pete.
Maxine also competed in the championships taking on the ladies in division 4 and had a great ride to come home with a silver medal. Congratulations Max!!”
