“PPCC Communication”
July 2021
Hi all….Welcome to the July 2021 edition of the PPCC Communication.
June 2021:
Mixed numbers of riders out during this cold winter month of June. Not only the weather affecting numbers but also late nights with the 2021 ‘Tour de France’ being broadcast on free to air TV.
June certainly hasn’t been kind to us weather wise with an average 9.00am temperature of 12C over our 13 riding days. In June, Port Pirie recorded 42.8mm of rain and we had showers on a good number of our riding days. Average wind speed over the 13 ride days was 16kph so from these stats, you can be excused from not taking the bike out. A couple of these days had the group roll out with good intentions, only to turn back and complete the ‘tour of Port Pirie’ or several laps of the airport course. You know it’s cold when you now see the majority of riders in long sleeves, jackets, long Knicks and winter gloves.
Again, good to see a number of riders back on the Abattoirs Road course leaving Gary’s at 8:50am with the aim of ‘catching’ Gary’s group and riding back in to Pirie as one group. Hopefully July is a little kinder to us weather wise.
Regardless of the weather conditions there are always good numbers back for coffee and a seat around the gas heater. A number of birthdays in June with a several moving from their 60’s to 70, one turning 77 and the ‘baby’ of the month turning 59. Not a good month for dieting with the obligatory cake being brought along to celebrate the occasion. Happy birthday to you all from all of us.
Great to see ‘JR’ back on weekends and on occasions, on his bike. We are all thinking of you JR.

Whyalla Cycle Club – Crystal Brook 60km Cycle Road Race:
The WCC has informed me that the 60km Crystal Brook ride has been cancelled but replaced with a ride/event on August 7th. See attached email re ‘event’. More information will be given as it comes to hand but I can tell you that you will need to have ‘cycling insurance’ to participate if you do not have the appropriate race licence. You will be required to show your BikeSA membership card on the day which includes insurance as part of your membership.

Club Colours:
After a discussion, a number of members expressed a desire to see the green in the ‘proposed’ new club kit changed to blue. I have put together a set using Black Chromes website design tools and sent them off to have a ‘mock up’ done so that we can what they will look like. I’ve asked them to use the same designs we used for the green and yellow so that we can compare the 2 sets. Stay tuned.
Accessories for you and your Bike – Required by Law:
I came across a presentation put out by the Government of SA, Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure called ‘Cycle Instead – A Guide for New and Rusty Riders’. It provides guidance for SA bicycle riders and references the Cycling Road Rules of South Australia – ‘Cycling and the Law’. One particular section was of interest – Helmets. (I know we all know about helmets but…..)
Required by law:
HELMET:
When riding you must wear a helmet. It must comply with Australian standard AS/NZ2063, be properly adjusted and securely fastened. A helmet must also be worn by any passenger, such as a child in a carrier seat or trailer. A correct fit is important. Your local bike shop can help you find the right size and adjust it for best fit.
TIPS FOR CORRECT FIT:
Position the helmet so that it protects the forehead (10 to 15mm above your eyebrows).
Tighten helmet at red button or at the adjustment point at the back of the helmet.
Fasten the strap under the chin, with one finger width ease between strap and chin.
Tighten the straps so that they are both firm and comfortable. The plastic slide should make the straps meet just below the ears.
The helmet should fit securely and be unable to slide forwards, backwards or side to side.
Note: In the event of a crash, you should purchase a new helmet even if damage is not visible. The foam in your helmet provides protection by absorbing the impact. This impact compresses the foam, reducing its future effectiveness.
