“PPCC Communication”
May 2022
April 2022:
It was inevitable but COVID has been amongst our group. Whether it be testing positive or as a close contact, COVID has had an impact on the group throughout April and early May. Rider numbers have been ‘up and down’ throughout April but is a credit to those impacted by COVID that they have done the right thing so as to protect the rest of the group.
‘Close contact’ exposures are sure to increase throughout society with COVID rules being ‘relaxed’ but we have to remember, the virus is still about and with more variations being identified. Thank you Kym for your ‘after ride’ hospitality over 3 weeks due to COVID.
If you are identified as being’ positive’ to COVID or as a ‘close contact’ you have some obligations as outlined by SA Health. sahealth.sa.gov.au.
Please check with SA Health to find out what you are required to do. The protocols relevant for this week will possibly be different next week as changes are made by SA Health.
REMEMBER….if you are feeling unwell or have minor cold like symptoms, stay home, get a rapid antigen test done and follow the isolation instructions to be sure you do not have the virus before coming in contact with the group.
Continue to wear your mask, sanitise your hands and apply social distancing when out in the community.
PPCC New Cycling Kit:
Our new ‘kits’ have been delivered and it’s great to see them being worn with the ‘bright’ colours ‘lighting’ up the roads. We now need to coordinate a group photo with everyone wearing their new kits.
Des Parker investigates the year that was 1980:
Port Pirie Cycle Club celebrate the golden jubilee of the Tour of the North.
The Port Pirie riders who have won the event are Bert Heller (1934), Andy Rutgers (1937), Arnie Edwards (1947), Bill Shepherd (1954), Dean Williams (1956), Bill Davis (1965), Kevin Murphy (1967), Lionel Knibbs (1969), Don McVicar (1973) and John Malycha (1978). (Des Parker, The Recorder 7 June 2017)
Des Parker highlights 1958 Port Pirie:
Pirie cycle team wins the state title. The team was C. Bairstow, B. Rutgers, D. Williams and G. Moritz.
(Des Parker, The Recorder, 10 April 2017)
Nosey Parker: From the 1954 archives:
Clem Bairstow was a champion when he won the state track title by 30 yards. He became the state all-round track cycle champion at the Norwood Arena. (Des Parker, The Recorder, 26 November 2019)
Whyalla Cycle Club Road Season:
The Whyalla Cycle Club has sent through their road ‘program’ for 2022. There are a number of ‘come try’ events scheduled for which we have participated in over the last couple of years. The first is the ‘60km Stirling North to Quorn’ handicap race, June 25th with a start time 10:00am and nomination fee of $20. I don’t think we have done enough long distance riding to participate in this event but if you are interested, give me a call and I’ll give you the details.
The next ‘come try’ events:
-
Saturday 9th July, 60km handicap – Cleve, Kimba-Mangalo. (Contact me for more info if interested.)
-
Saturday 20th August, 60km handicap – Crystal Brook or Gladstone return or similar northern areas.
The 20th August event is one that we have had numbers riding in and we do have time to ‘train’ longer rides prior to the event. Please contact me if you are interested in this August 20 event so we can organise some longer rides.
BikeSA:
Please check your BikeSA memberships as it’s about this time of the year you may find it is up for renewal. Renewal can be completed on the BikeSA website, by phone or ‘snail mail’. As per previous years, forward your receipt to our Treasurer for reimbursement of the fees.
As a Bike SA member you can participate in their organised rides. Contact Bike SA or check their web site.
